The European bison, also called the wisent, and zubr (zshoobr) in Poland, once roamed the great temperate, deciduous forest biome that stretched from the British Isles, through most of Europe and into Siberia. In recent decades, time has taken its toll on the once continuous distribution of bison, which now exist in a few isolated areas. The largest concentration of European bison live in Poland's Bialowieza National Park. The European bison is the largest mammal on the continent. Large bulls can stand over 6 feet tall, be longer than 9 feet, and weigh over 2,000 lbs. Males are larger than the females, but both sexes have short horns. They live in mixed deciduous forest and coniferous forests in the east of Europe. They mostly eat leaves, bark, acorns, lichens and mosses. In the wild, the European bison lives in herds which are led by a mature male. Older individuals of both sexes lead a solitary existence The bison is active during the night and also to some extent during the day, but it rests in the afternoon. The mating season is in September, when there are vicious fights between adult bulls. The gestation period lasts for about nine months, when the female gives birth to a single calf.
The present population of 3,000 European Bison are all descended from from 12 individuals (11- Bison bonasus bonasus and 1- Bison bonasus caucasicus). The autumn of 1929 marked the triumphant return of two European bison to the wild. They were placed in a specially prepared reserve in the Bialowieza forest. After ten years, their number grew to 16 individuals. Fota Wildlife Park are proud to be part of this reintroduction program.
