Primate Health and Communication Field Course: June 5th to June 18, 2017

The goal of this course is to provide specialized training in the field techniques important for primate field research and conservation while simultaneously experiencing one of the most diverse communities of plants and wildlife anywhere on the planet.

By focusing primarily on the titi monkeys (Callicebus brunneus) and tamarins (Saguinus imperator and Leontocebus weddelli) present at the field site, participants will learn behavioral observation techniques and engage in data collection while also acquiring fundamental field biology skills such as orienteering and navigation, recording and analyzing spatial data, and using appropriate laboratory procedures. We emphasize field activities that promote direct inquiry and hands-on applications of classroom lectures, which for this course will include specialized training on primate behavior and social relationships, parasite ecology, vocal and olfactory communication, and other related topics. These lectures will be presented by experienced instructors, as well as investigators actively collecting data in these areas of study at this field site. Participants will additionally read and discuss selected literature on primate ecology and conservation issues pertinent to the the Madre de Dios region of Peru.

This course will be held at the Los Amigos Biological Station, also known by its Spanish acronym EBLA (Estación Biológica Río Los Amigos). Situated between the Madre de Dios and Los Amigos Rivers on terra firme forest rising above the floodplain, this 1,119-acre field station abuts a larger conservation concession and features palm swamps, an oxbow lake with giant river otters, and a 200-foot observation tower overlooking the vast rainforest canopy. Every day participants will experience incredible biodiversity that includes 595 species of bird, 11 native primate species, many important reptile and amphibian species, and countless entomological wonders.
